Board & Committees

Trustees

The Society is governed by a Board consisting of seven (7) Trustees. Of these, three (3) Trustees who do not hold officer positions shall serve staggered terms of three years. At each subsequent annual meeting, the Board of Trustees is authorized to appoint individuals to fill any vacancies that may arise. No Trustee may serve more than three consecutive terms. The President and other Officers serve as ex officio members of the Board and retain full voting rights.


Standing Committees

Nominating Committee

A Nominating Committee shall be established and shall include the two most senior Trustees and one member at large, all appointed by the President. This committee is responsible for proposing candidates for election as Officers and Trustees at the Society’s annual meeting.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee shall consist of the Secretary, the Vice-President, and one Trustee appointed by the President. This committee reviews all membership applications and forwards recommended applicant lists to the President for submission to the Board for approval.

Anniversary Committee

An Anniversary Committee, made up of three members appointed by the President, shall oversee all planning and arrangements related to the annual celebration of Robert Burns’ birth. This includes securing an appropriately qualified speaker for the event. All recommendations made by the committee are subject to approval by the President and the Board of Trustees.

Annual Events Committee

The Annual Events Committee shall be appointed by the President and shall consist of three (3) members. This committee is responsible for the planning and successful execution of annual events as outlined in the Constitution and directed by the Board of Trustees.

The Robert Burns Society of Charleston Inc. is recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to celebrating and sustaining Scottish-American heritage in the South Carolina Lowcountry. This commitment includes the promotion of historical awareness, cultural expression, and military traditions associated with Scotland. The Society fulfills its mission by hosting educational and cultural activities, supporting the mastery of traditional Scottish arts—such as Highland Bagpiping, Highland Dance, Scottish Fiddle, Scottish Harp (Clàrsach), and the Scots Gaelic language—and by providing grants and scholarships that support academic advancement within the Scottish-American community.
